User Path Analysis: See How Readers Navigate Your Site

After a user enters an article, where do they go? Do they follow internal links into deeper reading, or read and leave? Path analysis answers exactly that — it has far more texture than just looking at bounce rate.

Where path data comes from

Spot the breakpoints

Split paths by intent

Informational users and converting users take different paths. Split the two to give different entries different guidance, instead of one set of guidance for everyone. Compare one week of paths before and after launch and see whether breakpoints decreased — far more convincing than bounce rate alone, because it presents the behavior itself rather than one aggregate percentage. In reviews, pair path changes with business actions: whether paths got shorter after a new section launched, whether second clicks improved after adding internal links — with the evidence in hand, where next quarter’s budget goes becomes obvious at a glance.

What users search on-site often exposes needs the path didn’t catch. Overlay search terms with paths and you can find which entries and content to add — breakpoints appear immediately. For example, many people search “price” but never see a pricing page in the path, meaning the guidance breaks at that link; add an entry there and conversions improve — better than blindly adding pop-ups.

Path data can correct the site structure in return. If users keep bouncing between two types of content, it means they’re too far apart in the information architecture — put them closer or add cross entries.
