Keyword Intent Layering: Mapping Each Keyword to a Funnel Layer

When keyword intent layering isn’t done, the most typical symptom is: a long explainer article has a “Buy Now” button at the bottom, bounce rate 80%; while a user who already wants to place an order searches in and sees 3000 words of concept explanation. The keyword isn’t wrong, the page is using the wrong layer.

Quick conclusion: behind every keyword corresponds a position on the user’s decision chain, from “realizing there’s a problem” to “deciding who to buy from.” Pin the keyword to a specific layer, and page type, content length, CTA strength, and assessment metrics can all align at once. The basis for judging layers isn’t the literal meaning of the keyword, it’s the content form currently presented on the search results page. After layering is done right, the same traffic can yield an extra chunk of conversions — because you’re no longer using the wrong content to接待 the wrong person.

What problems each of the four layers needs to solve

Four layers for the funnel is enough — any finer and editors can’t judge clearly. The core difference at each layer is how much the user knows right now and what they’re still missing.

  • Awareness layer: the user only feels symptoms, doesn’t yet know there’s a solution. Typical sentence patterns are “why does…” “what causes…”. This layer needs education, don’t sell.
  • Solution layer: the user knows they need to solve the problem, is comparing what approaches exist. Sentence patterns become “how to do” “…method” “how to improve…”. This layer needs to give actionable steps.
  • Selection layer: the user has locked in the category, starts comparing products. Sentence patterns are “A vs B” “…recommendation” “which is better”. This layer needs to give judgment standards and clear trade-offs.
  • Decision layer: the user has already chosen, only needs the final push. Sentence patterns are “price” “how much” “free trial” “how to sign up”. This layer needs to clear obstacles, answer all doubts at once.

Above the four layers there’s also the coarse division of navigational, informational, commercial, transactional — the two frameworks don’t conflict: the former manages page form, the latter manages funnel position. For basic concepts, first look at four types of search intent before breaking down further.

Use SERP to verify layer judgment, don’t rely on feel

The same keyword can have completely different intent in different industries. The only reliable basis is to open the search results page and see what types of pages rank at the top — the search engine has already counted real choices for you through rankings.

Tutorials, step-by-step图文, checklists Solution layer Operation guide Download template or tool
Comparison reviews, rankings, roundups Selection layer Comparison page and ranking View solution details

Operation method: search the keyword in an incognito window, record the count of each page type in the top 10 — the highest proportion is the dominant intent. If the top 10 has 3+ types mixed, this is a mixed-intent keyword — split into two pages to handle, or use one page with segmented anchors to cover. Don’t ignore the “People Also Ask” module in the results page either — it’s a free source of lower-layer keywords, the collection method is in PAA Q&A type keyword usage.

Pair content and metrics for each layer

The value of layering lies in this configuration table. Which layer a keyword falls on, how to write the page, what data to look at — no need for ad-hoc discussion.

Layer Content length Internal link direction Core metric Reasonable conversion rate
Awareness layer 1800+ words Toward solution layer Impressions, dwell time Low, look at lead capture
Solution layer Around 1500 words Toward selection layer CTR, downloads Medium
Selection layer Around 1200 words Toward decision layer Page interaction depth Relatively high
Decision layer 600 words is enough Toward conversion page Form submission rate Highest

Pay attention to the directionality of internal links. Awareness layer articles guide downstream, decision layer pages shouldn’t guide back too much — otherwise it’s equivalent to pushing someone about to close a deal back into learning mode. The whole site’s layer relationship is uniformly managed with the content pyramid structure, which specific URL each keyword belongs to is landed in the keyword to URL mapping table, avoiding two articles competing for the same keyword at the same layer.

Complete flow from keyword table to layered landing

When you have hundreds of keywords on hand, judging layers one by one isn’t realistic. First batch-process with rules, then manually revise boundary cases.

  • Batch-tag by sentence-pattern keywords: containing “what is, why, cause” goes to awareness layer, containing “how, how to, tutorial, step” goes to solution layer, containing “compare, recommend, which, ranking” goes to selection layer, containing “price, how much, trial, buy, sign up” goes to decision layer.
  • Keywords the rules can’t hit go into the manual pool, run SERP verification one by one — usually about 20% of the total.
  • Do semantic grouping for keywords within the same layer, one group shares one page — the method is in keyword clustering and topic keyword groups.
  • Sort each group by competition to decide priority — the evaluation method references keyword difficulty KD interpretation.
  • Fill the results into the mapping table, label three statuses: existing page, gap page, pending merge page.

On scheduling, prioritize filling gaps in the decision layer and selection layer — these two layers are closest to money and show results fastest. Awareness layer has the largest content volume but slowest return, suitable for steady output rather than concentrated sprint. With limited budget, first do competitor keyword gap analysis, find keywords competitors are eating at lower layers that you’re still blank on and fill those first.

Three common mismatches and how to fix them

After layering is done, problems often appear in the execution环节. These three mismatches are the most common and also the easiest to fix.

  • Wrong page for the layer: decision layer keyword paired with a long explainer. Fix by moving the conclusion and price to the first screen, shifting long content below.
  • Multiple pages duplicate at same layer: three articles all targeting the same selection layer keyword group. Keep the one with the best data, 301 the rest into it — the process is in keyword self-competition fix.
  • CTA strength misaligned: awareness layer article hard-pushing orders. Switch to resource download or tool trial, change the conversion goal to leaving contact info.

Do a排查 once per quarter. Use the GSC query report to see what queries each page actually brings in — if a decision layer page is getting all awareness layer queries, it means its understanding has diverged from the search engine, rewrite the title and first paragraph.

Landing takes three days: day one export the site’s top 100 keywords, batch-tag with four layers by sentence-pattern rules, list separately those the rules can’t hit; day two run SERP verification one by one for keywords in the manual pool, confirm the layer and record the page types of the top 10; day three fill the mapping table, mark gap and duplicate pages, schedule the five pages to fill this month. Set independent assessment metrics for each layer — awareness layer doesn’t look at conversion rate, decision layer doesn’t look at dwell time. Next quarter review once with GSC, see whether actual queries match the preset layers, rewrite the first screen of pages that have diverged.
